Is Kratom Legal In Alaska?

Kratom does not seem to be particularly well known in Alaska, and thus hasn’t attracted much fanfare in either direction. The regulations in any given state for kratom are largely shaped by the interests of the people. If Alaska hasn’t seen much general interest in this natural remedy, it’s easy to see why there hasn’t been a lot of vocal people either for or against the plant.

However, just because there isn’t a lot of attention as of yet doesn’t mean that kratom will stay unknown forever. If you want to find out more about the classification of kratom, Alaska kratom laws, and the history of the plant in the state, we’ll give you all the facts that are worth knowing.

Classification of Kratom in Alaska

Kratom is not currently classified in Alaska, meaning it’s legal for people to own, grow, distribute, and purchase. Qualified merchants are also allowed to sell kratom.

If you’re buying kratom powder Alaska though, remember that the lack of classification exists alongside a general lack of regulation. Manufacturers may take advantage of the lack of regulation by selling fake or even harmful products.

Because the regulation is so lax, it’s worth doing your research when it comes to buying kratom in Alaska so you can be certain you’re getting a safe and effective product.

Current Alaska Kratom Legislation

There is no known legislation in Alaska that directly addresses kratom. In August of 2016, the DEA placed kratom on a temporary ban for the entire US before revoking the ban in October of 2016. However, it seems entirely possible that Alaska officials were not even made aware of the temporary rule.

There haven’t appeared to be any strong movements for kratom in the state, though it should be noted that kratom did make headlines in Alaska in 2018. This was because salmonella was found in kratom across 41 states, and the FDA confirmed that two of those cases occurred in Alaska. This outbreak took place between the beginning of 2017 through half of 2018.

Those affected in Alaska first experienced symptoms in the spring of 2018. One person bought the kratom online and the other purchased powder from a store in Anchorage. While this event didn’t prompt legislation, hopefully it did prompt consumers of kratom to do more homework when it comes to researching the products they buy.

Is kratom illegal in Alaska? Short answer: No. There are no cities or regions within state lines that ban the plant. Alaska kratom legality may change in certain townships though if the state continues to see problems with unregulated products. However, it should be noted that news stories for kratom in the state are few and far between.

Buying and Shipping Kratom in Alaska

Apart from the one report of the contamination of salmonella, there have been no other reported problems of people purchasing kratom in Alaska. However, it does seem as though kratom is not necessarily easy to find within the state. This means most people who take it are likely ordering online.

There have also been reports of people having problems with standard shipping services in Alaska, such as UPS, FedEx, and USPS. However, there have been reports from other people who have purchased in other states.

While kratom is legal both at the federal and state level for Alaskans, other states and cities have banned the use of kratom. It is possible for your package to be stopped in one of the banned states if it makes a stop there during the shipping process, though it is extremely unlikely.

Employees of carrier services are required to follow federal law, so you are not breaking any laws regardless of where your package travels within the US. There may be a delay though if employees need to sort out how federal and Alaska kratom laws affect their actions.

Kratom Advocacy

The major advocacy association in Alaska for kratom appears to be the American Kratom Association (AKA). This is a consumer group, meaning it was not formed for corporate gain.

The AKA supports the regulation of kratom, but it is expressly against banning the plant. It monitors not just federal legislation against kratom, but also state, city, and municipal regulations. In fact, they’ve managed to get several laws overturned through their advocacy work.

In 2018, the AKA asked the supporters of kratom in Alaska to visit the offices of their local legislators and to provide informational packets to them that show the potential benefits of kratom. However, it’s not clear what type of response (if any) they saw in the state. If laws or public opinions begin to shift about kratom, in either direction, it’s certain that the AKA will stay on top of the matter.
