Maryland Kratom Laws
Kratom has been the center of news in the United States within the past decade. This botanical product, which comes from the leaves of a tropical plant found in Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia, has been widely for its analgesic properties as well as to help with digestive issues. It was used heavily in that region dating back to the middle of the 19th Century, and despite Thailand’s government placing a ban on it in 1943, there are up to a million in that nation alone who still partake in it.
Kratom’s popularity spread from that region across the globe to countries in Europe with the assistance of retailers on the Internet before gaining notice in the United States around 2010. But as that occurred, federal authorities had a skeptical eye on the product. Incidents where kratom users became sick in different states with a sharp increase in 2014 added to their concerns, which compelled the Drug Enforcement Agency to try to bankratom through Schedule I classification.
This was halted after an joint protest, comprised of people who testified to kratom’s positive effects, along with 51 members of Congress, finally reached the agency’s attention. As a result, state and local governments were left to plot the best way forward when it came to their constituents and determine their own laws and regulations regarding kratom.
Kratom’s Presence In Maryland
Kratom became a topic of discussion in Maryland around the same time it got to be more noticed around the country. This was due to purveyors offering it through different websites. The initial wave of individuals who tried kratom did so for help with their discomfort, mood and energy levels. Several users were part of those who have been harmed by the nationwide opiod crisis, and were looking for help dealing with their issues, often with some degree of success.
This group led others to want to try kratom, and in turn this demand prompted store owners to have kratom in stock in their establishments with smoke shops and convenience stores being first among them.
When it came to reports of kratom users falling ill, Maryland’s department for PoisonControl had received 27 calls from 2010 up to 2017. Health department officials did feel that this number might not be reflective of what could be happening in the state in terms of those suffering the adverse effects of using kratom. And there were others who felt that more research needed to be done to find out about the more beneficial elements to kratom, with the University of Maryland’s School of Education leading the way.
Law enforcement in Maryland didn’t see much buzz until one case in Anne Arundel County in 2017 where a seizure of 158 grams of kratom were included in the confiscation, making it the first such seizure in the state.
