Current Kratom Laws in Montana
As more individuals in the United States are opting to look at more natural products as an aid in their healing process, some products have found themselves under the microscope as to their actual effects and safety. One of these happens to be mitragyna speciosa, otherwise
known as kratom.
Kratom is derived from a tropical tree that can be primarily found in the region of Southeast Asia, primarily in the country of Thailand. Kratom has been used there for centuries for its analgesic properties, and this caught the attention of the West in the early 2000’s with those in the United States learning more about it around the year 2010.
As interest in this botanical grew, the federal government kept a critical eye on it and pushed that there were hazardous elements to its usage. The Drug Enforcement Agency attempted to place a ban on kratom 2016 after a swath of incidents casting it in a bad light, but advocates for its responsible use, along with medical researchers who wanted more analysis, compelled them to shelve those efforts. As a result, each state had to approach kratom in their own way to deal with its pros and cons.
Kratom Moves in to Montana
Residents in Montana began to take notice of kratom thanks to the natural product being available through retailers online. It gained a high amount of attention among those who were in search of ways to combat discomforts they suffered, including mood and emotional regulation surrounding the perception of pain. This came about as the state was dealing with healthcare crises that have led some to name it “a pain desert”.
Part of this atmosphere was the rising problem of opioid addiction, much of which came about due to medications being prescribed, and overprescribed, in the aftermath of surgical procedures and other medical situations. Kratom appealed to these individuals because of the potential it might have to help boost self guided efforts to wean themselves off of opioids.
This demand helped to spur some physical retailers like those who had specialty health supplement stores and dispensaries to make kratom and related products available. However, untested and low quality kratom led to certain incidents where users suffered adverse effects as a result of ingesting kratom that was tainted and impure.
Is Kratom Legal In Montana?
At the moment, kratom is legal to purchase and possess in the state of Montana. The state’s public health office has begun to take notes on the placement and sales of kratom in certain establishments potentially as a precursor to some sort of legislation, with advisories to inspectors on how to proceed being posted in February 2018.
Another aspect of this lies in the state’s Vision Zero initiative aimed at curbing the wave of those driving under the influence, with kratom being cited as showing up in toxicology tests as something to note going forward. Montana is a state to watch when it comes to kratom legalization, considering it’s stance on other herbal remedies and hemp based therapies, including marijuana.
Currently, there isn’t any legislation on the state government level for kratom in terms of regulation or banning it in accordance with federal suggestions.
