Kratom Laws in the State of Vermont

There are a number of natural products today that are widely used in society for well-being and health purposes. Each of these has had an extensive journey which included close examination of how they could benefit people who used them. In a few cases, that benefit was considered to be questionable and has drawn significant scrutiny. Such is the case with mitragyna speciosa, otherwise known as kratom.

Kratom hails from Thailand, and is derived from the leaves of a tropical tree. The natural product has been a part of traditional medicine in Southeast Asia dating back to the middle of the 1800’s and was heralded for its effectiveness in relieving pain. Despite authorities in the region taking steps to limit its usage, kratom was still in demand and this notoriety caught on in Europe and eventually in the United States.

People in various states took to using kratom, and the federal government had concerns about what the effects of long-term kratom use could be on them. In 2014, a swath of problematic incidents where kratom was involved compelled agencies like the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency to strongly consider banning the consumption of kratom on a national level. But they relented two years later before making such a decision due to appeals from a coalition of medical researchers and members of Congress who felt that more analysis of kratom should take place.

To that end, each local and state government, including that of Vermont, was left to determine their best approach for dealing with kratom and its usage, sale and purchase.

Kratom Comes to Vermont

For those living in Vermont, kratom became prominent due to first being available for sale online. Those who initially ordered and tried it were often content with the way that it affected them, and many began to attest to how it helped them beat addiction to opioids that were prescribed to them. The increasing popularity of kratom in Vermont led a few places to carry kratom products for purchase, often with little regulation or quality analysis.

State officials became concerned when there were certain cases of people who used kratom falling ill. It prompted the Vermont health board to closely examine kratom in 2013. This coincided with a rash of cases where some experienced adverse effects across the nation. The most visible stretch of this was seen in 2014, but there have been more cases that have taken place since then. It prompted the Vermont state legislature to take decisive action.

Is Kratom Illegal In Vermont?

Vermont took the steps to ban kratom in 2016, placing it among five other states to enact such legislation and one of the earliest to do so. Specifically, the ban focuses on two main components of kratom which are 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine. Health officials felt that these components posed considerable harm to those using the natural product for a lengthy period of time.

The details of the ban were updated in the most recent legislative session. It makes it illegal to possess, purchase or consume kratom within Vermont.
